In 2017, two Workshops on Writing and Publishing Academic Papers took place. 17 MA and PhD students took part in the workshops, which introduced them to different strategies of writing and publishing of academic papers. They also suggested strategies for improving the efficiency of the writing process, helped to make the papers of participants more structured and understandable, and provided insights into the logic of reviewing and editing processes in international outlets which every author should know. As a result of the workshops, the participants got practical experience and gained insights into the practice of publishing and peer-review processes.

In 2017, the competition was conducted for the fourth time. Over 20 research papers from Russia, Germany, and Europe in various social science domains, including sociology, political science, economics, and international relations, were gathered via an open call. Written by MA and PhD students, the papers covered topical issues of Russian, German, and European societies, as well as of international relations between Russia, Germany, and Europe.

Вчера в Центре изучения Германии и Европы состоялся финальный этап отбора на нашу стипендиальную программу для аспирантов, в который, после отбора комиссией по портфолио, прошли три претендента.
The project “Arte Punctura” (2017-2018), organized by the CGES spin-off ARTS4CITY studio, comprises three components: (a) on-site research, (b) art-interventions, (c) public discussions. The studio builds a dialogue between European creative communities and researchers and Russian experts, creatives, researchers, students, and local citizens to explore ways of stimulating creativity in cities.

The First World War was the Great War, as its scale and its influence were really global. This war determined the outlook of the 20thcentury. The consequences of the First World War defined not only the following path of history, but determined the balance of power in the world and the very system of international relations. That is why studying the history of the First World War helps to understand the problems of the present day.

The German Director of the CGES Andreas Vasilache gave a keynote speech on “The European Crisis as a Generalised Insecurity Machine” of the DAAD-ambassador’s meeting “Embassies of the EU countries in dialogue with the DAAD” in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and participated in the roundtable discussion on “Encouraging exchanges – strengthening cohesion: The importance of European university cooperation in the context of the current processes of change in the EU” with participants from European embassies and transnational academic institutions.
