The Russian Spring Academy 2020

From February 25 to March 3, 2020

St Petersburg

From February 25 to March 3, the second part of the Annual Joint German-Russian Academy — The Russian Spring Academy — was held in St. Petersburg. The Academy has been organized annually by the European Academy Otzenhausen with the support of the Center of German and European Studies of SPbU since 2013.

The Academy gathers German and Russian students in order to give the participants from Europe a deeper understanding of Russian politics, history, society, and culture. This year, the Russian Spring Academy was subtitled „Russia belongs to the Council of Europe — Russia belongs to Europe!” and gathered more than 30 students and teachers from Germany, as well as about 15 students of St. Petersburg State University.

The program included lectures by professors of St. Petersburg State University on mass media, civil society and everyday life in today’s Russia as well as Russian internal and external policies in Europe and difficult sides of the Russian history. Thematic workshops, roundtables, discussions, guided tours and meetings with the Russian young politicians were also included in the programme of the Academy.

One of these days, participants had a field trip to Veliky Novgorod, where they attended lectures by professors of Novgorod State University and by local politicians on identity, education, and politics in Novgorod Oblast.
