The final of research paper competition for young scientists took place in the Centre for German and European Studies in St. Petersburg on November 23, 2013. The competition was organized by CGES and the Council of Young Scientists at the Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University. Research papers in various scientific domains, including sociology, political science, economics, management and international relations, were submitted to the competition. Accomplished by graduate and PhD students of Russian higher educational institutes, the papers covered important up-to-date problems of European and Russian society.
The applications were reviewed in 3 stages: formal selection, anonymous expert evaluation and final competition. 22 graduate and PhD students of St. Petersburg State University, NRU – Higher School of Economics, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Belgorod State University, International Business Academy and other Russian universities and educational institutes, participated in the competition.
The final round of the competition consisted of presentation of 6 research papers, which were given the highest points by expert evaluation. The presented papers covered such questions as: social and professional characteristics of European court officers as a social group, business planning in joint Russian and German companies, methods of providing the information security in Europe and Russia, specific features and disadvantages of research grants system in the context of science development, problems of migrant integration into civic society in France, social and economic geography of entrepreneurship. After the finalists got additional points for the quality of presentations, two winners in each category were defined. They were awarded a grant to undertake an internship and continue their research in Europe as well as a possibility to publish the improved papers in CGES working papers: http://www.zdes.spbu.ru/en/scientific-dialog/publications.
Yuriy Kabanov (NRU – Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg) gained the highest points for his paper Information / Cyber Security Discourses and Policies in the EU and Russia: A Comparative Analysis in category Graduate Student. The first place among PhD students was taken by Evgueniy Zazdravnykh (Economic faculty of St. Petersburg State University), who presented the paper “On location of entrepreneurship in Russia: In accordance with market or not?” According to a special decision of the jury, an opportunity for publishing a paper in CGES Working Papers was also afforded to Dmitriy Zhikharevich (Faculty of Sociology of St. Petersburg State University).
The competition strongly stimulated the writing of scientific papers in English by students of St. Petersburg and other Russian universities. In 2014 due to the high level of interest the competition for scientific articles will be again conducted by Centre for German and European Studies and Council of Young Scientists at the Faculty of Sociology in St. Petersburg State University.
