August 29, 2019

Centre for German and European Studies

Today, a workshop on ‘Theories of Social and Cultural Networks’ led by Jan Fuhse, researcher of Humboldt University, Berlin is held at the Centre for German and European Studies at St Petersburg University.

The workshop brought together participants of the CGES project ‘Creation of knowledge on ecological hazards in Russian and European local communities’ including CGES affiliated researchers as well as the students of MA ‘Studies in European Societies’ involved in the project.

The workshop started with an introduction into relational sociology of and around Harrison White. Then participants surveyed such mechanisms as contagion, homophily, institutionalization and turned to the idea of culture as a network and to its linkage with social networks. Theoretical concepts in conjunction with appropriate methods and empirical examples were extensively discussed.

Full description of the workshop is attached.
